WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE CONFIDENT BOATER
This isn’t your typical boating class. The Confident Boater is a six-hour, interactive classroom experience built around real-world boating situations, practical knowledge, and the lessons learned from more than 30 years on the water.
Through group discussions, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and real-life scenarios, we’ll explore everything from weather, tides, navigation, and rules of the road to safety, boat handling, and making better decisions on the water.
Whether you’re a new boater or have years of experience, you’ll walk away with knowledge you can put to use the next time you leave the dock.
Learn By Doing
Forget sitting through hours of lectures. You’ll work through real boating situations, practice knots and line handling, explore navigation tools, and share experiences with fellow boaters.
Questions and participation are encouraged.
Learn from Experience
Captain Bill brings over 30 years of boating knowledge into the classroom, with a special focus on the waters around Naples, Marco Island, and Southwest Florida. Learn from real situations, common mistakes, and practical lessons that help you become a more capable boater.
COME CURIOUS. LEAVE MORE CONFIDENT.
EVER FIND YOURSELF WONDERING,
“WHAT IF?”
Even experienced boaters encounter situations that make them second-guess themselves. Sometimes it’s a changing forecast, an unfamiliar waterway, or simply not knowing what to expect.
The Confident Boater is built around the real questions boaters face every day. We talk through the situations, explore the options, and help you develop the judgment to make confident decisions.
- IS THE WEATHER REALLY GOOD ENOUGH TO GO?
- HOW MUCH WATER DO I ACTUALLY HAVE?
- WHO HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY?
- WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?
- AM I READING MY CHART CORRECTLY?
- WHAT IF I HAVE TO DOCK IN STRONG WIND?
- HOW DO I KNOW WHICH CHANNEL TO FOLLOW?
- WHAT IF MY ENGINE QUITS?
- WHAT SHOULD MY PASSENGERS KNOW?
- WHEN IS IT SMARTER TO TURN AROUND?
Common questions
Do I need any boating experience to attend?
Not at all. The Confident Boater is designed for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced boaters looking to refresh their knowledge. We explain the fundamentals in plain language while sharing practical insights that even seasoned captains can appreciate.
What if I already have years of boating experience?
You’re welcome, and you’ll probably find there’s still plenty to learn. Boating technology, navigation tools, and local conditions present challenges for everyone. We encourage experienced boaters to share their knowledge and learn from others. Some of the best lessons come from discussing situations we’ve actually encountered on the water.
Is this a classroom course or will we actually go boating?
The Confident Boater is a six-hour interactive classroom experience. You’ll participate in group discussions, hands-on exercises, demonstrations, and real-world boating scenarios. We also offer separate on-the-water training for those who want practical experience at the helm.
Can I attend with my spouse, partner, or a friend?
Absolutely, and we encourage it! Boating is often a shared experience, and having everyone aboard understand safety, navigation, communication, and basic boat handling makes for a more confident crew. You don’t have to be the captain to benefit from the course.
Will this course help me navigate around Naples and Marco Island?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of The Confident Boater is its focus on Southwest Florida waters. We’ll discuss local waterways, shallow areas, tides, navigation markers, weather patterns, and common challenges around Naples, Marco Island, and the surrounding waters.
Will I receive a boating license or certification?
The Confident Boater is a practical boating education course, not a state-approved boating safety certification program. It does not replace any boating education requirements that may apply to you. Our focus is on helping you develop the knowledge, awareness, and judgment to make safer decisions on the water.
